How this reading time calculator works

Pages left divided by pages per day gives days to finish, rounded up to whole days, and the finish date is today plus that many days. If you know your time rather than your page count, minutes per day × pages per hour ÷ 60 converts it.

The deadline mode reverses it: pages left ÷ days until the date gives the pace you need, and pages per hour turns that into minutes a day.

Pace definition mirrors ReadLog's pagePacePerDay in ReadingStats.swift (pages ÷ elapsed days, capped at 30), copied September 17, 2026. Typical reading speeds are general figures, not measurements from the app.

Questions

How long does it take to read a 300-page book?

At 40 pages an hour, a common pace for a novel, about 7.5 hours of reading. At 25 pages a day that's 12 days; at 50 pages a day, 6 days.

How many pages can the average person read in an hour?

Roughly 30 to 50 pages of a typical novel, based on an adult silent reading speed of about 200 to 300 words per minute and 250 to 300 words per page. Dense non-fiction is slower. Time yourself on 10 pages for a number that's actually yours.

How does ReadLog measure my reading pace?

Pages logged in the last 30 days divided by the days elapsed since your first session in that window, so a new reader isn't understated by a fixed 30-day divisor. This calculator uses the pace you type in.

How many books a year is 20 pages a day?

20 pages a day is 7,300 pages a year. At 300 pages a book, that's about 24 books.
