Spine-lift height for a target sharpening angle (or the angle for a lift you used), freehand or on a guided rod system.

How this whetstone angle calculator works

Freehand mode uses the trigonometric relationship between a blade's height and the sharpening angle: spine lift = blade height × sin(angle), and its inverse, angle = asin(spine lift / blade height). Guided-rod mode uses angle = atan(rod height / horizontal distance), the geometry of a fixed pivot and a spacer under one end of a straight guide rod. Both modes report the per-side angle (what you set on one face) and the inclusive angle (both sides combined, what you'd measure across the finished edge).

Questions

What's the easiest way to set a consistent sharpening angle without a jig?

Measure your blade's height from edge to spine, multiply by the sine of your target angle, and that's how high to prop the spine off the stone — with two stacked coins, a stack of playing cards, or a wedge. Hold that height through every stroke.

Why do Japanese knives use a shallower angle than Western knives?

Japanese kitchen knives typically run harder steel (often 60+ HRC) that can hold a thinner, more acute edge without chipping in normal kitchen use. Western knives use softer, tougher steel that needs more metal behind the edge to survive, hence the wider angle.

How does a guided (fixed-angle) sharpening system set its angle?

The angle is the arctangent of the rod or spacer height divided by the horizontal distance from the blade's clamped edge to that rod. Raising the rod, or clamping the blade closer to it, steepens the angle.

Is spine lift the same as bevel width?

No. Spine lift is how far you raise the knife's back off the stone to hit an angle; bevel width is how wide the resulting ground facet looks on the blade, which depends on the angle and the edge's thickness, not on spine lift directly.
